NID set to give Heritage Railway Sites a Facelift

The National Institute of Design (NID) and the Ministry of Railways is set to enter into a collaboration to give a facelift to heritage railway sites across the country.

The National Rail Museum (NRM) and its heritage wing in Delhi will soon partner with NID to sign an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) wherein design students will promote railway’s heritage sites in the country.

As part of the project, students of the design institute will disseminate information at rail museums through digital technology and light, sound and interactive media, designing souvenirs and outdoor signages. “The idea is to give railway museums a facelift and make them more tourist-friendly through effective design intervention, booklets and digital communication,” said Pradyumna Vyas, director of the NID.

The project will cover railway lines built in the nineteenth and early twentieth century by the British in India, like in Darejeeling, Kalka-Shimla, Kangra valley, Kashmir, Nilgiri mountains in southern India and Matheran in Maharashtra.

The railway lines in Darjeeling, Nilgiri mountains and Kalka-Shimla have already been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The project will be part of the course for NID students. “Souvenirs form a big part of tourism promotion in any country. So it is a great work experience for design students to create relevant designs that showcase the same,” Vyas said.

Officials from heritage wing of the Indian Railways had visited NID last month to explore the possibility of partnering with the institute.

NID holds its 33rd convocation

Around 250 post-graduate and under-graduate students of National Institute of Design (NID) received their diplomas at the institute’s 33rd convocation ceremony on Thursday.

Addressing the gathering, CMD of Mahindra& Mahindra, Anand Mahindra, who is also the chairman of NID’s governing council, said degrees in designing were like the new MBAs.

“I can smell a revolution in the air as I stand here at the campus.The future belongs to artists, designers, inventors, innovators and explorers. There are battlefields like workplaces and public landscapes where you will have to bring in change.We will do our best to multiply your tribe (designers),” he said while talking about the four new NIDs that are being mentored by the NID, Ahmedabad.

In his welcome address, NID director Pradyumna Vyas highlighted four new collaborative agreements that the institute has signed with similar entities across the world.

NID is awaiting Central nod for a “Centre of Excellence” status for itself. If it comes, the institute will get Rs 25 crore for infrastructure development from the Centre.

Noted filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, who was the chief guest for the event, also spoke, urging young designers to develop a “new paradigm of culture through design”.

NIDians begin Job Mela with Rs. 38 Lakh offer

If the whopping Rs38 lakh per annum offer to two students, the highest ever package offered to a student of National Institute of Design (NID) is anything to go by, the economic slowdown does not seem to have affected the prospects of design students. Placements Season-2012 at NID began on Friday.

The offer by Japan-based Toshiba company is reportedly more than three times higher than the highest offer made last year — thanks to a new initiative by the institute called Student Online Portfolios. This initiative aims to connect industries and students to minimise the gap between education, research and industries. The portfolios can be accessed by design community and industries.

As per the figures shared by the institute last year, Rs11.08 lakh per annum was the highest salary offered to students. In a press release, the institute said that on the first day of placements, 32 companies, including big names like Honda R&D (India) Pvt Ltd, TCS, Maruti Suzuki, Titan Industries and Toshiba, had participated.

Object Drawing and Exploded Views | Advanced Exercise 7

An object can be anything which we can be seen and touch. Pencil drawing art is perhaps the most expressive in all art forms. Try to start with a simple drawing like a simple pot, flask, glass etc and then move to complicate object drawing.

An exploded view drawing is a diagram, picture or technical drawing of an object that shows the relationship or order of assembly of various parts.

It shows the components of an object slightly separated by distance, or suspended in surrounding space in the case of a three-dimensional exploded diagram.

This exercise is pretty useful in entrance test as examiners are generally impressed by properly organized drawings. Two Months to go. Prepare well guys.

NIDian wins I-Design Award

A product design student from National Institute of Design bagged the award in the 'Medical Equipment and Devices Design' category for 2012-13 with three other recipients in the I-Design Award competition in Chennai. Every year, products that focus on innovation, technology, design and creativity are recognized by the awards.

Malav Sanghvi of NID had participated in the competition with his project 'Walking Aid support stick'. "There is a need for design inputs in the field of amputation and prosthesis. I emphasized on the needs of the persons with disability to use of the hand's muscular power to operate the leg by a strategically designed stick. The aid can be used for physical ailments like weak leg muscles, muscle tear, ligament tear, knee problems, paralysis, short foot and prosthesis training," he said. The stick is strapped on the leg, thigh, below knee, ankle and one of the forearms. The high point of the design is adjustability of straps by which the user transfers maximum force from the hands to the legs. 

The compactness of the device allows for easy packaging and subsequent ease in transportation and storage. The strap can be rotated, thus allowing the stick to be used on both legs, said Sanghvi.

Memory Drawing | Advanced Exercise 5

Just about the single most important aspect of drawing is the art and craft of seeing. If you have been doing art for a little while now you probably have noticed that the longer you look at something the more you see. It is something that takes time and discipline but it will greatly enhance your ability to draw and paint.

You have to take a really good look at things if you want to draw them well. It is a fact. So for this lesson we are going to practice something you probably don't practice much: Drawing from memory.

In drawing from memory this is what you do: You take a really good look at something then you look away and try to draw it. Simple as that. But take a really good look at the thing you want to draw, spend several minutes trying to get a sense of how it is shaped, what colors are in it and how the light falls on it. Then take out your sketch pad and try drawing it. Don't look back at the object until you are done with the drawing.

Animation gets a thumbs up in Ahmedabad

A relatively new form of storytelling in India, graphic novels are steadily and surely setting up an interesting trend. National Institute of Design (NID), along with Alliance Francaise, is going to present the second edition of its animation festival from October 5, with this idea in focus.

The Graphic Narrative Project will focus on children's content this year. "It does not mean that graphic novels are only meant for children. That is a myth which will hopefully shatter in our discussions during the fest," says Sekhar Mukherjee, head of animation department, NID.

The highlight of the week-long event will be the presence of one of the animation legends of the world, Jacques-Remy Girerd, the French producer and owner of the pioneering Folimage studio. Several of his award winning films, like Raining Cats and Frogs, Mia and Migoo, and My dear Little Planet, will be screened. An interaction with the master storyteller is one of the treats lined up for all animation lovers.

"When we speak of heritage status for Ahmedabad, it goes beyond architecture. There is art and culture that needs quality and caliber too. NID is always supportive of such endeavours," says Mukherjee. He suggests that if places like the walled city, the kite museum, Lothal could be etched in graphic novels, they would become much more appealing and add to the heritage conservation in the long term. The idea is already being implemented as Esther David, a renowned city based author, has expressed a desire to publish a graphic novel on Amdavad (Ahmedabad) by 2013.

Pointing out differences between comic books and graphic novels, director of Alliance Francaise, Philippe Martin said, "While comics have a specific size and conventional layout, graphic novels mix different elements like stories, pictures, drawings and have greater freedom of expression."

Four exhibitions, including one on roles of several people involved in making an animation film, will be showcased at NID. "Interest in animation and graphic novels is increasing. Maybe it is due to the lack of time people have for reading or the flexibility which it represents, but it is the visual impact that is finding takers," explains Martin. Graphic novels being available on ipads, smart phones add to the lucrative future.

Government mulls Centre of Excellence status for NID

In a development that may see National Institute of Design (NID) confer degrees in undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies in design, Anand Sharma (Union minister for industry, commerce and textile) on Wednesday said that the premier design school will soon be granted status of national centre of excellence by an act of the Parliament.

Sharma was in Gandhinagar to inaugurate NID’s new campus for postgraduate courses. This development will put the institute at par with Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) of the country.

“A bill in this regard is being prepared. I’m told that it will be ready by next week and would be presented to the union cabinet. NID will soon be declared a centre of excellence,” said Sharma. He was accompanied by Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Arjun Modhwadia and other party members.

Sharma also announced that Centre, as part of its 12th five-year plan, is looking at a proposal to set up centres for jewellery design, automobile research and design, recreation and a mess at NID’s Gandhinagar campus, costing the central exchequer Rs 25 crore for the same.

During his visit, Sharma also inspected baskets woven by artists from South Africa who were trained at NID.

Speaking about this development, Director of the institute, Pradyumna Vyas said that granting status of centre of excellence to NID will help the institute confer bachelors, masters and doctorates in design to its students.

Currently, it awards undergraduate degrees and a postgraduate diploma to its students. “Proposal in this regards is being discussed for past two years. We expect an announcement soon,” said Vyas.

Also announced were new NIDs at Hyderabad, Jorhat, Bhopal and Kurukshetra benefiting 2,000 design students every year.

Amul to set up Kurien's memorial in Anand

The Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Limited ( KDCMPUL), popularly known as Amul Dairy, will set up a memorial in the name of Dr Verghese Kurien.

Kurien, Father of India's White Revolution and the architect of Operation Flood, who passed away on Sunday, had started his stint with the co-operative sector from Amul Dairy which he had joined in 1949.

It was much later that he set up institutions like the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) putting small town Anand on global map.

Amul Dairy already houses a Dairy Museum at the main dairy plant premises in milk city Anand. But the new memorial will be dedicated to Kurien.
The dairy union is planning to construct a memorial where ashes of Kurien will be kept.

Kerala-born Kurien, a Syrian Christian by birth but a self-proclaimed atheist, was cremated in Anand as per his wish at 'Kailashdham', a Hindu crematorium, on Sunday evening after an all religious prayer at Amul Dairy's Sardar Patel Hall.

"We have already collected ashes of Dr Kurien after his cremation. The memorial that will come up inside our main dairy plant premises will be erected after consultation with his family members. We will put up the entire proposal during our board meeting scheduled at the end of this month," Amul Dairy's chairman Ramsinh Parmar told TOI on Monday.

The co-operative was already planning to give a new look and design for the Amul Dairy museum for which it has approached the National Institute of Design (NID).

The Amul Dairy museum which is a photo gallery, has a model of the garage (which was Kurien's first home in Anand) behind it apart from the house where Kurien had stayed for years before he shifted to Kurien Enclave - which remained home to the doyen of cooperatives till he breathed last.

As a bachelor, Christian and a non-vegetarian Kurien did not find a house to stay in Anand when he arrived in the dusty town where he was posted as a dairy engineer at the government creamery, Anand in May 1949. He had converted a garage at the creamery into his house.

The model of the garage was designed by late architect Suryakant Patel by bringing all the original material from the garage to build it.

The house where Kurien stayed as manager and later general manager of the Amul Dairy was converted into Dr Kurien's Award Gallery and has all the awards including Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. It was inaugurated on November 26, 2000 which was Kurien's 80th birthday by his wife Molly Kurien.

‘Poison’ has gone, stain’s next

The gutka ban has made the railways happy. The paan and gutka stains have been costing the railways a bomb to clean the trains, with the spending touching Rs 1.5 crore annually.
The new swank violet trains that the railways inducted in service two years ago, have changed colour due to paan and gutka stains and spit marks on them. The railways anticipate that the new-age Siemens violet coloured trains would now get fewer spit stains.

However, commuter organisations are not too hopeful of a change. “Paan stains have damaged the aesthetics of the train and the ban on gutka may reduce spitting, but not actually reduce paan consumption,” Subhash Gupta, a member of National Railway Users Consultative Committee.

“Violet colour was a bit of a mistake as it has been covered up with dirt and paan stains. The colour of new trains should be a bit bolder so that it takes up the dirt and paan stains. The new trains will be made of steel and we will come up with a smarter colour pattern,’’ said a railway official.

The older trains had a reddish brown colour and the paan stain marks were camouflaged under it. However, the violet-white new shade of the Mumbai train has again exposed the habit of commuters in a big way. “The National Institute of Design has been asked to work on the aesthetics and design element of the new trains that are expected to come later this year.
