Preparing for NID Entrance Test - 2014

What should students focus on for the next six months in order to crack the NID Design Aptitude Test 2014? For the next six months, students should consider strengthening their drawing skills and keep abreast with current affairs, both national and international. 

 However, it is not just about learnt skill and talent, but largely about the creative process and design thinking. Students, most importantly, should know how to communicate an idea to the masses. 

It would also help to have a portfolio in place. If the student is consistent with his sketching and is up-to-date with his or her work s/he will have a range of work to showcase during the interview. Having worked with a variety of media is always beneficial for a strong portfolio. Work can range from doodles to finished pieces of work; there is no set criterion with regards to what should go in your portfolio. Play on your strengths.

What is the importance of joining a coaching class?

Coaching classes are not a must-do for students wanting to successfully attempt the NID entrance. While they do offer some insight — common queries of what to expect from the paper and solve sample papers — student shouldn't rely on it entirely. However, do remember that the question paper pattern is not set in stone and they must be flexible enough to deal with the diversity of questions.

What is the pattern of the question paper?

 In the 2013 exam, 25% of the questions focused on general knowledge; 25% logistic reasoning; another 25% allotted to drawing skills related to human anatomy and postures. The last 25% were based on creative thinking and applications . This was a rough breakdown in our paper, but it varies each year, we are told. There is no negative marking.

How can students manage a good score?

 The question paper, even though it grades, is qualitative in nature. It is important to answer sensibly and be confident about what you are drawing and answering. One should not worry about marks or scoring high; the focus should be on communicating your ideas creatively in the paper.

What kind of preparation is required post the written exam?

 Post the written exam, if selected, you'll have a studio test and portfolio interview at the campus. Studio test checks not only your creativity but also tests your hands-on skills and spontaneity. Observation and memory retention are other traits you'll be tested for. In the portfolio interview, you will be required to talk about your work over the past few years and answer questions put forth by the panelist.

Fewer foreign students at NID this year

The National Institute of Design’s (NID) move to attract foreign students at the campus suffered a major setback as India’s premier design institute managed to get only 15 NRI students.

Last year, when the idea to have 10 percent seats allotted for students of foreign origin and NRIs was proposed, the management gave it a green signal as the institute was confident of attracting students from across the globe.

However, the real story showed a completely different picture as the 15 students selected from the 26 applications are from countries such as Thailand, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Dubai and Qatar. The institute was expecting major participation from students from countries such as the UK, US, Australia and Germany which has a major chunk of NRIs.

Despite this, NID registrar Vijaya Deshmukh is still upbeat about the decision and said the poor response is because the institute did not adequately advertise overseas.

“The news of admission to foreign students has spread through word of mouth. As we plan for the next academic year, we intend to advertise with help from the Indian Embassy and through advertisement in newspapers overseas,” she said.

NID had decided to give admission to 10 percent foreign students from the
academic year 2013-14. As per the system, if the institute gives admission to 100 students, 10 additional students from the new criterion will be admitted.

Dream never dies: CM ensures it for tribal boy

For 25-year-old Karmu Majhi, the distance from Rayagada to Ahmedabad was unimaginably long. On Wednesday, when he set out for the prestigious National Institute of Design (NID) at Ahmedabad, he would have felt it as the beginning of the journey of his lifetime.

For someone, who hailed from the forested and hilly Uparjhiri village of tribal-dominated Rayagada district’s Kashipur block replete with stories of hunger and cholera outbreaks, pursuing a Degree course in Graphic Designs at the NID was a fairytale that came true.

Thanks to the generous support from Odisha Government, Karmu boarded the train to the Gujarat capital on Wednesday to take admission in the two and a half-year course. Till last Monday though, he would have doubted he could make it. He approached Chief Minister’s Grievance Cell seeking financial support for pursuing the course for which he had toiled day and night.

It had all started with his childhood passion for drawing and painting. He drew his way to top and bagged numerous prizes in his district but his financial background was feeble. He slogged hard and with support from his father, a BPL card holder farmer who had to raise five other children, Karmu had got admitted to BK College of Art, a government college where he studied Visual Art and supported himself by making wooden partitions as a part-time job. 

But dreaming of an NID degree that cost more than Rs two lakh towards course fee was a crime but dream he did.

He appeared for the entrance test and cleared it. He went on to qualify the studio test and personal interview. There were just 15 seats up for grabs and Karmu had one to his name. But it was that Rs two lakh that mattered.

When he approached the CM’s Grievance Cell last Monday, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik directed SC and ST Development Department to contact NID and assure State Government’s willingness to pay Karmu’s course fee which will be transferred electronically.

With NID beckoning, Karmu left for Ahmedabad by train on but not before meeting Naveen at his residence to express his gratitude.

Department Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce Invites Suggestions on the National Institute of Design Bill, 2013

The National Institute of Design Bill, 2013, introduced in the Rajya Sabha on the 11th March, 2013, has been referred to the Department Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce, headed by Shri Shanta Kumar, M.P., Rajya Sabha, for examination and report.  The National Institute of Design Bill, 2013, inter alia, seeks to provide for declaration of National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, as an institution of national importance and make it a body corporate to nurture and promote quality and excellence in design education, to conduct research and training in all disciplines related to design; to confer honorary degrees, diplomas, certificates, awards and other academic distinctions or titles in disciplines relating to design and to act as a nucleus for interaction between academia and industry by encouraging exchange of designers and other technical staff between the Institute and the industry and undertaking sponsored and funded research as well as consultancy projects. The Committee has decided to invite memoranda, containing views/ suggestions/ comments from individuals/ experts/ stakeholders, etc., interested in the subject-matter of the Bill, and also to hear oral evidence on the subject. Those desirous of submitting memoranda to the Committee may send their written memoranda either in English or Hindi to Shri Narendra Kumar, Deputy Director, Rajya Sabha Secretariat, Room No. 540, Second Floor, Parliament House Annexe, New Delhi-110001 (Tel: 23034084, FAX: 23014948, E-mail: narendra.rs@sansad.nic.in) within fifteen days of publication of this advertisement. As stated in the brochure and website, the NID Results for Entrance 2013- 2014 were to be posted by today ie, March 04, 2012.

NIDians begin Job Mela with Rs. 38 Lakh offer

If the whopping Rs38 lakh per annum offer to two students, the highest ever package offered to a student of National Institute of Design (NID) is anything to go by, the economic slowdown does not seem to have affected the prospects of design students. Placements Season-2012 at NID began on Friday.

The offer by Japan-based Toshiba company is reportedly more than three times higher than the highest offer made last year — thanks to a new initiative by the institute called Student Online Portfolios. This initiative aims to connect industries and students to minimise the gap between education, research and industries. The portfolios can be accessed by design community and industries.

As per the figures shared by the institute last year, Rs11.08 lakh per annum was the highest salary offered to students. In a press release, the institute said that on the first day of placements, 32 companies, including big names like Honda R&D (India) Pvt Ltd, TCS, Maruti Suzuki, Titan Industries and Toshiba, had participated.

NIDian wins I-Design Award

A product design student from National Institute of Design bagged the award in the 'Medical Equipment and Devices Design' category for 2012-13 with three other recipients in the I-Design Award competition in Chennai. Every year, products that focus on innovation, technology, design and creativity are recognized by the awards.

Malav Sanghvi of NID had participated in the competition with his project 'Walking Aid support stick'. "There is a need for design inputs in the field of amputation and prosthesis. I emphasized on the needs of the persons with disability to use of the hand's muscular power to operate the leg by a strategically designed stick. The aid can be used for physical ailments like weak leg muscles, muscle tear, ligament tear, knee problems, paralysis, short foot and prosthesis training," he said. The stick is strapped on the leg, thigh, below knee, ankle and one of the forearms. The high point of the design is adjustability of straps by which the user transfers maximum force from the hands to the legs. 

The compactness of the device allows for easy packaging and subsequent ease in transportation and storage. The strap can be rotated, thus allowing the stick to be used on both legs, said Sanghvi.

Government mulls Centre of Excellence status for NID

In a development that may see National Institute of Design (NID) confer degrees in undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies in design, Anand Sharma (Union minister for industry, commerce and textile) on Wednesday said that the premier design school will soon be granted status of national centre of excellence by an act of the Parliament.

Sharma was in Gandhinagar to inaugurate NID’s new campus for postgraduate courses. This development will put the institute at par with Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) of the country.

“A bill in this regard is being prepared. I’m told that it will be ready by next week and would be presented to the union cabinet. NID will soon be declared a centre of excellence,” said Sharma. He was accompanied by Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Arjun Modhwadia and other party members.

Sharma also announced that Centre, as part of its 12th five-year plan, is looking at a proposal to set up centres for jewellery design, automobile research and design, recreation and a mess at NID’s Gandhinagar campus, costing the central exchequer Rs 25 crore for the same.

During his visit, Sharma also inspected baskets woven by artists from South Africa who were trained at NID.

Speaking about this development, Director of the institute, Pradyumna Vyas said that granting status of centre of excellence to NID will help the institute confer bachelors, masters and doctorates in design to its students.

Currently, it awards undergraduate degrees and a postgraduate diploma to its students. “Proposal in this regards is being discussed for past two years. We expect an announcement soon,” said Vyas.

Also announced were new NIDs at Hyderabad, Jorhat, Bhopal and Kurukshetra benefiting 2,000 design students every year.

Why isn’t NID campus wheelchair-friendly

Country’s premier design institute admits first wheelchair-bound student in 50 years but finds itself unprepared to handle students with special needs.

Tomorrow, I should be in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. My life should take a new turn. New city, new people, new friends. This all should make me excited as I, Vishal Sawant, got admission in one of the best design institutes in the country. It’s like a management student who wants to learn from IIMs. For a designer, getting admission into NID is a dream. My dream partly came true. 

Yes you read it right. Partly. I’ve done my part. 

This is what Vishal Sawant, a physically challenged designer from Pune, wrote on his blog. His excitement at gaining admission to the National Institute of Design (NID) is palpable in each word.

Just as tangible is the crushing disappointment he experienced on visiting the country’s premier design institute. The amazingly lavish, green campus ‘where you can see creativity flowing through every nook and corner’ was not designed for wheelchair-bound students. 

Having given the 30-year-old admission to its graphic design department, authorities of the 50-year-old institute hastily built a ramp to the first floor. While the temporary ramp will help Vishal access the first floor which houses his classroom, library, graphic studio, printing lab and IT lab, he will not be able to visit the auditorium which is on the second floor. The auditorium is where conferences, seminars, guest lectures, film screening and important activities take place. 

The authorities also plan to construct an elevator and design a special toilet for the physically challenged. The question is: How long will the institute take to complete the work? Vishal will lose precious academic days as the new session began on Monday.

Questions Galore

On his blog, vishalsaw.blogspot.in, the 30-year-old posted some pertinent questions following campus visit:


•   If there is a physically handicapped category, why isn’t the campus wheelchair-friendly?
•   Why are there ramps on the ground floor, if you can’t access the rest of the building?
•   Why are there no lifts to go to the first and second floors? 

“It does not matter if you have admitted physically handicapped students. What matters is if you are ready for such students,” he wrote. 

However, after finding about the efforts being made by the institute, he said, “I have heard they have built a temporary ramp which gives direct access to the first floor. It is encouraging that they are being sensitive to our needs.” 

Vishal, who graduated in Political Science from Fergusson College in Pune, added, “I hope the authorities will provide residential accommodation as it will be difficult for me to commute to campus every day. It will be tough for me to travel on my electric wheelchair during monsoon.” 

This request has put NID authorities in a fix as they do not provide hostel facilities to post-graduate students due to lack of sufficient rooms. 

Director Pradyumna Vyas said, “As a design institute, NID is sensitive to the needs of specially abled. We also plan to build an elevator and toilet for barrier-free accessibility. It might take a month or two to complete the work.” 

About hostel accommodation, Vyas said, “We offer hostel facilities only to undergraduates.”

Start your Preparation right away! | Basic Exercise 1

Vacations are nearing end. So are the hot summers. It’s time to start your preparation for NID entrance test. Five months are left so this should be a good time for shubh aarambh.
Well, for IIT or Medical Entrance Preparation we’ve got various reference books, mock papers and question banks. What for NID then?

NID Entrance Test is not based on logical thinking and reasoning skills. The exam judges your creativity level and thinking dimension.

NID educators want those minds which are creative and trainable.

So what should be my first step?

Ask yourself: Am I serious about designing? Do I really wish to make a career on it? Is it real dedication or just a hobby? Is it my final choice or just another option?

If all your answers for the above questions end with a YES, then welcome aboard and join the league of designing aspirants.

As stated earlier, NID entrance test is based on creative thinking in a productive manner.
Umm, define Creativity?

Well, thinking unconventional or non-linear or different is known as creative thinking. Creative thinking is appreciated if it has a positive utility.

A logical man will use an arrow with a bow but a creative man may use an arrow to row.

How to boost creativity?

Creativity like any other math problem has a rule: the more you practice the more you learn. Being a creative person, you need to explore more and develop your thinking.
Exploring things will help you in understanding the current functioning and how you can further make it better and more useful.

For this, observe your surroundings and keep a track on General Affairs. Spend a part of your day to just think and explore. At first you may find this exercise too silly or the ideas worthless, but later on as you master this skill you will begin to have a whole different perspective about things which would be the foundation stone your designing career.

Spend at-least 20 minutes everyday to think and explore. Take a particular object or event and think how you could make it better than it is in present.
