India's Premier D-Schools

In the previous post, we have shown the world's best 60 D-schools. But, when it comes to India, options seem to be Narrow. India has quite a few number of Premier and Quality D-Schools. This, is because designing is not considered as a Profession (Except the Popular Fashion Designing). 
             Thus, I present some of the Good D-Schools to pursue your dream and become a Professional Product and/or Transportation Design.

India's 8 Premier D-Schools

Government Owned Colleges:
  • National Institute of Design: NID is a design school in India. The institute functions as an autonomous body under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. NID is recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) under Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, as a scientific and industrial design research organization.
Business Week has ranked NID (32 alphabetically) in its list of top design schools in the world.

Industrial Design: Product Design / Furniture and Interior Design

Admission is open to students who have passed or who will appear for qualifying examinations under the Higher Secondary (10+2), or equivalents like AISSCE/IB/ICSE/State Boards etc. Upper age limit for candidates is 20 years (relaxable by 3 years for SC/ST candidates) as on 1 June of the year of admission.

Product Design
Eligibility: B.Tech,B.E.(Mech./Mechatronics),B.Arch.

Transportation & Automobile Design+
Eligibility: B.Tech/B.E.(Automobile/Mechanical/ Mechatronics)/ B.Arch, Product Design from reputed Institutes/Design School in India and/or Abroad. 

Upper age limit for candidates is 27 years (relaxable by 3 years for SC/ST candidates) as on 1 June of the year of admission. Age relaxation upto 3 years for general candidates with relevant work experience may also be considered.

All candidates fulfilling the requirements of minimum qualification and within the prescribed age limit will be called for the Admission Tests to be conducted at 11 centers viz Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kanpur, Kolkata, Mumbai The test are held in January usually, the first weekend after the new year.

The test consists of design aptitude test; results of the written exam are published by 25th of March. Shortlisted candidates will be called for second phase of the admission procedure. Studio tests & interviews are held in Ahmedabad from around April 20th to May 5th every year. Call letters or admit cards for this phase will be posted by the last week of March. 

  • Department of Industrial Design, New Delhi : The School of Planning and Architecture had a modest beginning in 1941 as a Department of Architecture of Delhi Polytechnic. The School is a specialized University, only one of its kind, which exclusively provides training at various levels, in different aspects of human habitat and environment. The School has taken lead in introducing academic programs in specialized fields both at Bachelor's and Master's level, some of which are even today not available elsewhere in India. A site of 20 acres has recently been acquired south of JNU for developing a new campus.

         Eligibility : Bachelor degree in Architecture from a recognized university or equivalent

  • Department of Design, IIT Guwahati : IIT Guwahati is an autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institute of higher education established by the Government of India, located in Guwahati, in the state of Assam in India.Department of Design in Guwahati offers three important professional courses in design which include 2 year Master of Design program leading to M.Des degree and, 4 year Bachelor of Design program leading to B.Des degree and Doctoral studies in Design leading to PhD.

         Product Design
         Eligibility : Students applying for the undergraduate (B.Des) course in Design should qualify the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted by the IIT's as part of their central admission procedure. They are further shortlisted through an aptitude test for design.

      Product Design and Transportation Design
       Eligibility : Masters in Design (M.Des) is one of the unique program offered by Department of Design (DOD), IIT Guwahati. Student applying for post graduate (M.Des) program should qualify the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) conducted by IIT as a part of their central admission procedure. They are further shortlisted through aptitude test and further on through a personal interview session.

  • Industrial Design Centre, IIT Bombay : IDC is a premier Design School in India, established in 1969, by the government of India at the campus of Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai (IIT Bombay).
Industrial Design Center offers Master of Design degree (M.Des) programs in Industrial Design & Mobility and Vehicle Design as well as a Ph.D program in Design.

(Post) Graduate Program in Design

Product Design
Eligibility : Valid CEED Score and Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Architecture / Design/ Interior Design, or equivalent (or) Professional Diploma of NID/ Professional Diploma of CEPT (5 year program) or equivalent with minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grades (50% in case of SC/ST)

Mobility and Vehicle Design
Eligibility : Valid CEED Score and Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Architecture / Design/ Interior Design, or equivalent (or) Professional Diploma of NID / Professional Diploma of CEPT (5 year program) or equivalent (or) B.FA - Professional course in Applied Arts/Fine Arts(4 year Professional program, after 10+2), with minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grades (50% in case of SC/ST).

            Eligibility: 12th/12 years of Formal Education. Those with SSC/10th/10 years of Formal education require sitting an aptitude test. A minimum score of TOEFL: 173 (CBT) or IELTS: 6.0 or pass the Advanced English Test at Raffles Design International. Native English-speaking applicants are eligible for admission without submitting TOEFL or IELTS score.

Eligibility : Candidates must have passed 10+2 (any stream) or equivalent with minimum of 50% marks obtained in the final examination to be eligible for the above mentioned programs.
The candidate should posses Creative Aptitude & Skills necessary to pursue Design Education as well as adaptability to the situations which the profession demands. Candidates with the relevant portfolio would be preferred. All Indian students are required to take the Symbiosis Entrance Test (SET 2011) which will be held on May 7, 2011 (Saturday). Without a valid SET score, no candidate is entitled to seek admission to SID.

            Eligibility : Srishti offers a two-year Foundation Studies Program in Art and Design for candidates who have passed 12th Standard / PUC, 2nd year.
